NEW STUDY SHOWS POSSIBLE LINK BETWEEN A DAMP HOUSE AND CHILDREN’S NASAL ALLERGIES

By Karen Cioffi

It has long been established that allergies are aggravated by dampness. The reason: a number of allergens, including mold (fungi), dust mites, and cockroaches, thrive in or are attracted to damp environments.

Well, a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, took prior studies a step further. This latest study followed almost 1,900 Finnish children for six years. The results showed that children who lived in homes with dampness and mold are more likely to develop allergic rhinitis. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include: itchy nose, runny nose, itchy eyes, congestion, and sneezing, the causes of which are related to an allergic reaction to triggers such as dust mite droppings, pet dander, pollen, and mold.

In prior studies, the allergy related effects of children’s exposure to dampness and mold were always conducted simultaneously. This made the results vague in regard to whether the dampness and mold were a direct cause of allergic rhinitis (whether exposure preceded allergy development).

Thanks to the new study, it is much more apparent that there is a correlation between exposure to dampness and mold, and a child’s development of allergic rhinitis. According to lead researcher, Dr. Jouni Jaakkola, of the Institute of Health Sciences in Oulu, Finland, “Our study strengthens the evidence that exposure to indoor dampness increases the risk of developing allergic rhinitis.”

With this updated news in hand, Jaakkola advises parents to take note of water damage and damp areas in their homes. Any problems areas should be taken care of as soon as possible. “For parents of children who already have any form of allergy should be particularly careful to do so.”
