1. You’re busy, busy, busy, but not moving forward.
You’re writing lots of quality content, but you’re not getting traffic to your site
Make that content even better – be sure to include answers to problems and actionable steps for your readers.
Don’t just spin your wheels. Work effectively. Work productively.
2. You’re not mixing it up.
According to Coredna, “Sixty percent of marketers create at least one piece of content each day (eMarketer) but this encompasses written, image based, and audio content.” (1)
Various forms of online content include:
• Blog posts
• Podcasts (audio)
• Slideshare presentations
• PowerPoint presentations
• White papers
3. You don’t take the time to really know your target market.
Who is your target market? Men, women, both, young, old, are they struggling, if so with what? Where do they live, what motivates them?
You’ve got to know what your target market needs. To find out, just ask. Conduct surveys, ask questions and start conversations on social media and your website.
Take the time to know who you’re marketing to.
4. You’re not spreading your content.
You’ve got to take the time to ‘share’ your blog posts.
According to Nigel McHugh, “Content is king but distribution is queen, and she wears the trousers.” (1)
What’s this mean?
Promote the heck out of your content.
5. You think SEO is all you need.
Producing great content on a regular basis is great, but everyone is don’t that.
So, you need a slant. You need to put a different hook on it, a different angle.
Some marketers are using comics. You can use animation. Maybe weekly video tutorials. As in #2 above, mix it up though.
You need to engage the reader. You need to make her read your content rather than the millions of other tidbits of info out there.
6. You’re working on quantity over quality.
While you must write as often as possible and on a regular basis, you ABSOLUTELY need to produce quality content. There’s no way of getting around this.
Readers are savvy. Don’t waste their time with fluff or old content. You’ll just annoy them and lose readers.
7. You’re not thinking long-term.
Building a business takes time. Building a successful business takes ever longer. The marketing steps you take today may not produce results until next month or next year.
It’s all about perseverance and consistency.
8. You’re here, there, and everywhere.
Think focus here. While you should promote your content, if you try to hit every social network out there, you’ll be spreading yourself too thin.
Keep in mind that it’s important to ‘work’ social networks. You shouldn’t just post your content and hope it sticks.
You need to be social on your networks. You need to engage with other users. You need to share their content. You need to start a conversation.
You can’t do all this if you’re everywhere – there’s just not enough hours in the day.
9. You blindly follow marketing pros.
While you need to keep up to date with what’s going on in the online marketing world, you need to test what works for you.
Don’t blindly follow a best practice or the newest practice without testing it out. What may work for one marketer may not work for another.
10. You don’t optimize your content.
By now, everyone should know that you need to use keywords, deep linking, external linking, and so on.
